Sightseeing
Windamere is the original Heritage House of the Himalayas. For the average
traveler, these lands may appear remote and somewhat intimidating even while
intriguing. For the adventurous, the lure of faraway places with strange
sounding names is the reason for planning a journey to these lands. Whatever
the circumstances, Windamere aim to give the traveler an intense and
unforgettable experience of the Himalayan region: of the lands and people;
the food and drink; the sights and sounds.
Entertainment :
Windamere has its own company of artistes, who perform "The Songs &
Dances of the Hills", in an outdoor setting; and "Ghazals",
in the intimate setting of the hotel's Bearpark Parlour.
Christmas Week at Windamere
It runs from 18th December to 1st January every year, has been celebrated
at the hotel, in the same way, without interruption, since 1939. It has
become a tradition for well known entertainers from London's famous West End
Theater district, to entertain at Windamere during Christmas week. The

Botanical Gardens
It seems in the character of Britons to create botanical gardens wherever
they happily settle. And so they created the Lloyd Botanical Garden in
Darjeeling, which offers a protected habitat for many species of Himalayan
trees and plants.
Darjeeling Himalayan Mountaineering Institute
The institute offers training in mountain climbing, and maintains a
fascinating museum of memorabilia of famous mountaineers and expeditions of
the past.
Himalayan Zoological Park
Adjacent to the Mountaineering Institute, on Birch Hill, is the Padmaja
Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, which has attracted world attention by
successfully breeding endangered species like the snow leopard and red
panda.
Tea Gardens
The Darjeeling tea gardens are beautifully located, and the bungalows of
the managers pretty without exception. The tea gardens are worth visiting,
to observe the way tea is manufactured. Tea estate managers, "the
planters" as they are called, are known for their hospitality.
Monasteries
There are well over a dozen Buddhist monasteries in Darjeeling. The best
known is the Yiga Choeling Monastery, or the Ghoom Monastery, Darjeeling's
oldest, founded in 1850. in India.
